Twenty problems written vertically, one number stacked over the other with a rule beneath, arranged four across and five down under the heading “Stack and Solve”. The facts include 8x8, 9x9, 9x7, 7x7, 6x8 and 5x5, so the harder half of the table is well covered.

The vertical layout is the point of this page. A child who has only ever seen facts written across the line often hesitates the first time one is stacked, even when the fact itself is known cold. This is also the format that longer multiplication is written in later, so getting comfortable with it now removes one obstacle from that lesson. Each problem is numbered in a small box, which makes marking straightforward.
