About this worksheet

Six boxes of base ten blocks, tall rods for tens and single cubes for ones, with a line under each reading tens, ones, equals. The child counts each kind, writes both numbers, then writes the number they make together.

This is the sheet to start place value on, because it puts the quantity in front of a child before it asks for the abstraction. Four rods and three cubes is visibly forty-three, not a rule about which digit sits where. That comes later.

The box with one rod and four cubes is the one to watch. Fourteen is where children who have learned to read the digits left to right without thinking will write forty-one, and seeing the single rod next to four loose cubes is what corrects it.

Every number stays under sixty, which keeps the counting honest at Grade 1. Plain black on white and it downloads as a vector PDF at 65 KB.

What students will practice

  • Count tens rods and ones cubes separately
  • Write a two-digit number from its tens and ones
  • See why the digits in 43 mean what they mean
