About this worksheet
Twelve two-digit numbers in large type, each with one digit underlined, and the words tens and ones beside them to circle. A worked example sits at the top with the three in thirty-six underlined and tens circled.
There are no blocks and no pictures here, which is the point. Once a child has counted rods and cubes on the blocks sheet, this asks whether they can name the place without anything to count. It takes about ten minutes and it tells you quickly whether the idea has landed.
The numbers are chosen so that the same digit turns up in both places across the page. Two is underlined in twenty-six as a ten and in sixty-two as a one, and four is a ten in forty-eight and a one in thirty-four. A child answering by the digit rather than its position gets caught by those pairs.
