About this worksheet
Sixteen problems where the divisor is bigger than the first digit of the dividend, so 4 into 156 has to start with 15 rather than 1. The directions spell that out at the top, and half the problems leave a remainder.
Where to put the first digit of the answer is one of the most common long division mix-ups in fourth grade. A child who writes a 0 in the hundreds place, or tries to divide 1 by 4 and gets stuck, is exactly who this page is for. Every answer is a two-digit number, which makes a wrong start easy to spot.
What students will practice
- Decide where the first digit of the quotient goes
- Divide a three-digit number and get a two-digit answer
- Write a remainder with R when there is one
