About this worksheet

Six rows of ocean animals on a warm cream page, drawn in an old natural-history style with fine engraved lines and muted color. Starfish, clownfish, octopuses, hermit crabs, a shark and jellyfish, each row sitting on its own tinted band with three numbers to the right. The child counts the row and circles the number that shows how many.

The counts run from one to six and they are not in order, so a child cannot fall into a pattern and stop counting. The single shark is the row that catches most children out, because a row with one thing in it looks like a mistake until you actually count it.

The three number choices are always close together, which means guessing does not work well and a child who is unsure has to go back and count again. That is the whole point of the sheet at this stage.

What students will practice

  • Count a small group of objects and say how many
  • Match a count to the written numeral
  • Read the numerals 1 through 6
