Nine round sea animals in thick black outlines with their names in bold underneath. A manatee, a beluga, a sea lion, a squid, an angelfish, an eel, a sea snail, a swordfish and a clam. The heavy line is the whole design: a three year old holding a crayon in a fist cannot stay inside a fine outline, and a sheet that punishes them for it puts them off coloring.

Six rows of ocean animals on a warm cream page, drawn in an old natural-history style. Count the row, circle the number that shows how many. The counts run from one to six and they are deliberately out of order, so a child cannot fall into a pattern and stop counting.

The row with a single shark is the one that catches children out. A row with one thing in it looks like a mistake until you actually count it.

The same skill with the difficulty turned up. Nine boxes, counts up to nine, and the animals are scattered in loose clusters rather than lined up in rows. The pufferfish and the hermit crabs are the ones where a child has to keep track of what they have already counted.

Nine animals across the top and nine written instructions underneath. Color the crab red. Color the pufferfish yellow. Color the sea otter brown. Nothing on the page is labeled, so a child has to identify each animal from the name alone before they can do anything with the crayon.

The last instruction asks them to circle all of the animal names, which means a second pass back through the sentences they just read. Say that one out loud before you hand it over, because a child who goes hunting under the pictures will not find them.

Barnacle and cuttlefish are not words a child guesses at, and the manatee and the walrus are close enough in outline that a skimming reader will swap them.

Ten ocean animals to find in the grid, and every one has its picture drawn around the edge of the page with the word underneath. Otter, turtle, oyster, dolphin, clam, lobster, walrus, narwhal, manatee, stingray. Words run across and down only, which keeps it fair for a child still learning to scan a grid.

A twelve by twelve grid on warm cream, with ten animals illustrated in flat retro color above and below. Octopus, shrimp, orca, marlin, seal, anemone, sponge, urchin, penguin and tuna. Marlin, anemone and sponge are not the usual suspects, so a child who has done a few ocean word searches still meets something new.

Eighteen sea animals in full color, three names to tick under each. The wrong answers are the reason it works. Number one offers beluga, narwhal and orca, all three whales and two of them white. Number twelve offers octopus, jellyfish and squid. Number ten offers starfish, urchin and anemone.

A child cannot get through it on a first letter or a vague impression. They have to know which one is which.
