About this worksheet

Six sets of three numbers run down the left of this page, and three rounded boxes sit beside each one. A child reads a set like 5, 2, 7, decides which number is smallest, and writes the three in order across the boxes. The sets stay inside 1 to 20 and mix single digits with teens, so 12, 4, 17 asks a child to notice that four is smaller than both teen numbers. A bunny with a duckling, two crayons and an apple sit beside the pink title, inside a blue scalloped border.

Three numbers at a time is the right load for a child who has just learned to count past ten but has not yet had to put numbers in order on paper. Nothing needs to be added or taken away, so the whole task is compare, then write. The printed direction, write the numbers from smallest to greatest, is short enough to read aloud once and then leave alone, and at about ten minutes it works as a quiet warm-up or a first-thing-Monday page.

What students will practice

  • Compare numbers within 1 to 20
  • Order three numbers from smallest to greatest
