About this worksheet

Nine pictures in color with three empty boxes under each. Nothing is given, so the whole word has to come from the child, one sound to a box.

The boxes are doing real work here. They tell a child how many sounds to listen for and stop the letters running together, which is why this format shows up in nearly every phonics program. It is a genuine step up from the missing vowel sheet, so use it once middle sounds are landing reliably. Two pictures are worth naming out loud before they start, since the jet could be called a plane and the cup could be called a mug, and a child who says the longer name will run out of boxes.
