Ten wild animals run down the page in numbered strips, each with a small color picture on the left and three words to choose from on the right. A fox, an owl, a bear, a frog, a snake, a tiger, a zebra, a monkey, a deer and a seal. The child looks at the picture and circles the word that names it.
The wrong choices are picked from the same list rather than being nonsense, so a child who guesses from the first letter alone will still have to look twice. It suits a reader who knows their sounds and is starting to recognize whole words, and it works just as well as a quiet warm-up as it does for a first go at animal vocabulary.
