About this worksheet

Eight boxes, each holding a matched pair: the double on top, labeled “Double,” and directly beneath it the same fact with one more, labeled “Plus one.” The set runs all the way up, 2 + 2 and 2 + 3, then 3 + 3 and 3 + 4, on through 9 + 9 and 9 + 10. Sixteen problems in total, and the pairing is the whole lesson.

Doubles are usually the first facts a child truly knows by heart, and this sheet turns that small store of knowledge into roughly twice as many answers. The idea to say out loud is that 7 + 8 does not need to be worked out, because 7 + 7 is 14 and one more is 15. Watch for a child who solves the bottom problem from scratch and ignores the answer sitting right above it, since that is the habit this page exists to break.

What students will practice

  • Recall a doubles fact quickly
  • Use a known double to solve a near double
  • Add within 20 without counting on
