About this worksheet

Four short stories, each followed by a blank number sentence to fill in. Max counts 6 red apples and 7 green ones, Zoe watches 3 more birds land beside the 9 already in the tree, Ravi’s sister hands him 7 stickers to add to his 8, and Ella stacks 6 more blocks onto a tower of 5. Sums stay at 15 and below.

Word problems are where addition meets reading, and plenty of first graders who can answer 8 + 7 in a second will stall when the same question arrives in a sentence. The blank number sentence is the scaffold: it asks the child to translate first and calculate second. Read each story aloud together the first time, then hand the pencil over. Large plain type, no pictures to distract, and it prints black on white.

What students will practice

  • Pull the numbers out of a written story
  • Write an addition sentence to match
  • Solve and answer the question that was asked
