About this worksheet

Twelve problems under the heading “Sum It Up!”, each written the tall way with one number above the other and a rule underneath for the answer. The facts run from 6 + 4 up to 8 + 8, taking in 10 + 6 and both 7 + 7 and 9 + 6 along the way. A star border frames the page, with a pencil and an apple tucked into the bottom corners.

Most first graders meet addition written across the page, so the switch to columns throws some of them even when the facts are already known. Getting comfortable with the vertical form now matters, because it is how every two-digit and three-digit problem will arrive from second grade onward. If a child hesitates, point out that it is the same question wearing different clothes.

What students will practice

  • Read an addition problem set out vertically
  • Add within 20 and write the sum under the line
  • Keep digits lined up while working
