About this worksheet
Eight pairs of shapes, each pair with a fraction under it and a circle between them for the symbol. The child colors each shape to show its fraction and then writes greater than, less than or equal to in the circle. A small key under the directions reminds them which symbol is which.
The pairs follow the third grade rules for comparing. Some share a denominator, like two sixths and five sixths, where more pieces means more. Others share a numerator, like one eighth and one third, where the surprise is that bigger pieces come from the smaller number. Coloring both shapes first lets the picture settle the question, so a child can see why one eighth is less than one third before trusting the rule. Pair seven, two fourths and three sixths, comes out equal.
It is plain line art in black and white, easy on ink for a class set.
