About this worksheet

Nine sea animals across the top of the page and nine numbered instructions underneath. Color the crab red. Color the pufferfish yellow. Color the sea otter brown. The child reads each line and finds the animal it names.

What makes this harder than an ordinary coloring page is that nothing is labeled. A child who cannot yet tell a stingray from a manatee has to work it out from the picture, so the reading and the animal knowledge have to arrive together. The narwhal, the walrus and the eel are the ones that slow most children down.

The last instruction asks the child to circle all of the animal names. The names only appear inside the instructions themselves, so this is a second pass back over the list hunting for the eight animal words in the sentences they just read. Worth saying out loud before you hand it over, because a child who goes looking under the pictures will not find them.

What students will practice

  • Read a written instruction and act on it
  • Identify an ocean animal from its name alone
  • Work through a numbered list without losing your place
