About this worksheet

Fifteen nouns in a chart (puppy, park, brother, spoon, baker, zoo, frog and more) and a color code that turns each kind of noun into a color. People are green, places orange, things purple and animals pink. Once every box is colored, the child writes each word into the right column underneath.

The code is written as color words on crayons rather than as colored swatches, so a first grader reads the code before they color anything. It also means the sheet prints in plain black and white and is light on ink.

Doing the sort twice, once in color and once in writing, is the point. The coloring is where the decision gets made, and copying the words out afterward is a quiet check that it was the right one.

What students will practice

  • Sort nouns into person, place, thing and animal
  • Read color words to follow a code
  • Write each noun into the matching column
