Eight picture cards to cut out: a chef, a pond, a cup, a duck, a shop, a fox, a doctor and a bell, each with its word printed underneath. The child glues two into each box, under Person, Animal, Place and Thing.
Two cards to a box means the sort checks itself. A child who ends up with three cards in Thing and one in Place knows something has gone astray, and the pond is a good first suspect. It helps to talk about how a place is somewhere you can go, which a cup is not.
Hands-on and with no writing at all, it is a good first nouns page for a child who is still slow with a pencil.
