About this worksheet

A grid of thirty words with one way through. Starting at barn, the child colors a path to van at the finish, moving up, down, left or right and only stepping on nouns: dog, cake, pond, tree, nest, cup, sock and hat.

Every other square holds a describing word (hot, blue, happy, tall, funny), so the page quietly asks a harder question than most noun sheets. It is not just whether a word names something, but whether it names something or tells you about it. That is exactly the line first graders start to blur once adjectives come along.

Coloring the path makes it feel like a puzzle, and because there is only one route through, a finished page is easy to check at a glance.

What students will practice

  • Tell nouns apart from describing words
  • Read each word and decide quickly
  • Follow a path up, down, left and right
