About this worksheet

Sixteen naming words in a word bank (park, baker, frog, spoon, kite, store, nurse, horse and more) with no pictures attached. The child writes each one into the box it belongs in: Person, Animal, Place or Thing.

Taking the pictures away is the step up. On a picture sheet a child can look at a frog and know it is an animal, but here the word has to be read and understood first. Each box takes exactly four, so a child with five people and three places knows to go back and look.

Doctor and nurse sit alongside baker and sister, which is a good moment to point out that a job names a person too.

What students will practice

  • Sort nouns by reading the word alone
  • Write sixteen nouns into four groups
  • Spot that a job, like doctor or nurse, names a person
