About this worksheet

Eleven sentences, one conjunction hiding in each, and a strip of seven suspects across the top: and, but, or, so, because, when and if. I wanted to go swimming, but the pool was closed. The garden grew well because it rained all week.

Having the list right there makes this a friendly first page. The job is only to find the word, not to remember what counts as a conjunction, so a child builds up a feel for where these words sit in a sentence before being asked to use them.

Some join two whole ideas and some join just two words, like tacos or soup and paint and draw. Pointing out that both count is worth doing early.

What students will practice

  • Spot the conjunction in a full sentence
  • Recognize seven common conjunctions
  • Notice that a conjunction can join two words as well as two ideas
