About this worksheet

Three boxes at the top, each naming a conjunction and its job. And adds. But shows a difference. So shows a result. Below them are nine short sentences, and the child writes each sentence’s number in the box where it belongs.

Most conjunction worksheets ask a child to find or choose the word. This one asks why the word is there, which is the understanding that makes the rest of the set easier. Once a child knows that so means because of that, it stops getting mixed up with and.

There are three sentences for each box, so a lopsided sort is a sign to reread. The cat is small but loud is the one to watch, since it joins two describing words rather than two ideas.

What students will practice

  • Explain what and, but and so each do in a sentence
  • Sort sentences by the job their conjunction is doing
  • Tell a result from a difference
