About this worksheet

Twelve sentences and a word bank of seven conjunctions: and, but, or, so, because, when and if. Sam packed his goggles and his towel. The bus was late, so we were almost late for class. You can ride your scooter if you wear a helmet.

Seven choices is the widest word bank in the set, and the extra two (when and if) mean a child cannot get by on and, but and so alone. Because and so are the pair to watch. Both link a cause to its effect, but they face opposite directions, and sentences 4, 5, 11 and 12 put them side by side.

The sentences are about ordinary days (a lost kite, a muddy sidewalk, a long but funny movie) so the reading never gets in the way of the grammar.

What students will practice

  • Choose from seven conjunctions to complete a sentence
  • Tell a reason (because) from a result (so)
  • Use when and if as well as and, but and or
