About this worksheet

Five red apples run down the page inside a scalloped apple border, carrying the words map, top, nut, bed, and lip. Each has three circles beside it, one under Vowel and two under Consonants, and kids pull the word apart letter by letter.

The five words use five different vowels, a in map, o in top, u in nut, e in bed, and i in lip, so one page touches every short vowel sound once. The apple theme makes it an easy pick for the first weeks of school, when vowels and consonants are usually the first thing on the phonics list.

What students will practice

  • Decide which letter in a CVC word is the vowel
  • Write the vowel and consonants into labeled circles
  • Work through five words with all five vowels covered
