About this worksheet

Six portraits, each next to a family word in dotted letters on a set of handwriting lines, with an empty set underneath: mom, dad, baby, sister, brother and grandma. Say who the person is, trace the word, then write it again on your own.

This is where the set moves from reading family words to writing them. The dotted letters take the guesswork out of the spelling, so a child can put all their attention on forming each letter, and the empty line right below asks them to do it once more with nothing to follow. Saying the word out loud first is worth keeping in, because it ties the sound, the picture and the spelling together.

What students will practice

  • Trace six family words on handwriting lines
  • Write each word again without the dotted guide
  • Say the family word aloud before writing it
