Split the Sounds: Star Vowel and Consonant Sort

About this worksheet

Five words sit in outlined stars down the left of a dashed-border page: six, bug, van, mop, and hen. To the right of each are three circles under the headings Vowel and Consonants. Kids write the word’s vowel in the first circle, then its two consonants in order in the next two.

This is a step past filling in a blank. Instead of supplying one letter, a child has to take a whole word apart and say which job each letter does, which is the groundwork for spelling. Keeping the consonants in order matters too, since it is the difference between reading a word and just collecting its letters.

What students will practice

• Break a CVC word into three separate letters
• Tell which of the three is the vowel
• Write the two consonants in the order they appear
