Eight garden shop items wear price tags: seeds, gloves, a seedling, rain boots, a watering can, a tulip bulb, a pot and a trowel. The child finds the four pairs that cost exactly $1.00 together, colors each pair the same color, and writes the four number sentences. Every item belongs to exactly one pair.
Pairs that make 100 are the money version of number bonds, and they come up constantly when making change. The two pairs that end in 5 (35¢ with 65¢, and 55¢ with 45¢) are harder than the round ones, so a child who finds 90¢ and 10¢ first and saves those for last is working sensibly.
