The pairs are deliberately mixed rather than ordered, so a child cannot coast on a pattern. 0 + 8 sits directly above 6 + 4, and 9 + 0 turns up in the middle of the second column. Three of them put the small number first, 0 + 8 and 1 + 4 and 1 + 7, which is the arrangement children find hardest until someone points out they can start from the bigger number and count up.
The bees are enough to make it feel like a treat rather than a drill, without eating into the space where the math happens. A reasonable choice for a child who pushes back at plain worksheets.
