About this worksheet

Twenty problems written the stacked way, one number above the other with a line beneath and a box for the answer. Sums stay within 10, so nothing here needs carrying.

The vertical arrangement is the point. A child who is fluent with 4 + 1 written across the page can still be thrown when the same problem is stacked, because the eye has to travel down instead of along and the plus sign has moved. Meeting that layout early, while the numbers are still small and familiar, means the format is old news by the time regrouping arrives in first grade.

Twenty problems in four columns is a proper sitting, roughly a quarter of an hour for most children. Print it once they are comfortable with the horizontal sheets rather than as a first taste of addition.

What students will practice

  • Add two single-digit numbers within 10
  • Read an addition problem stacked vertically
  • Write the sum below the line
