About this worksheet

Five animals are mid-race with the finish line on the left, so the fox out in front is first and the pig at the back is fifth. An arrow under the track shows which way to count, and that detail does more work than it looks like: a child who has only ever counted from the left has to stop and think before answering.

Underneath, five sentences wait to be finished, one per animal, in a different order from the race itself. The word bank spells out first through fifth, so this is a reading and writing page as much as a counting one. It suits a child who recognizes position words on sight but is not yet writing them from memory.
