Ben turns seven. In the morning Mom makes a big cake, at noon his friends come over to play tag, then he opens a new red bike, and last of all everyone sings while he blows out the candles. Three short questions come first, then four events from the story, scrambled, for the child to number 1 to 4.
The time words do the work here: in the morning, at noon, then, last. A child who notices them can put the events in order without rereading the whole story, and that is the skill worth naming. The cake turns up at both ends of the day, made first and lit last, which catches a few readers out. Prints in black and white.
