About this worksheet

On Sunday, Dad makes pancakes. The child telling the story helps mix the eggs and milk, a little sister piles on strawberries, and the narrator goes for syrup. Four questions follow, each answered by one sentence of the story.

Because the story is told in the first person, the questions use I and my as well (“What do I help mix?”). That is a small but real stumbling block for some first graders, who need a moment to work out that I means the child in the story and not themselves. The sheet ends with a box to draw a favorite breakfast, a nice landing after the writing.

What students will practice

  • Read a short story told by a child
  • Answer questions about key details
  • Draw a picture in response to the reading
