Pip the Penguin Reading Comprehension for 1st Grade

About this worksheet

Pip is a little penguin who lives on the ice with his mom and dad. He cannot fly but he can swim fast, he likes to slide on his belly, and he slides down the hill with his best friend Lulu.

Five multiple choice questions follow, three choices each, and the child circles a letter. The wrong choices are the guesses a child might make without reading (a penguin that can fly, a penguin in a tree), so the format quietly rewards going back to the story. A friendly first look at multiple choice. Prints in black and white.

What students will practice

• Read a short animal story
• Choose the best answer from three choices
• Check each answer against the text
