About this worksheet

One big color picture of Pip’s bedroom sits at the top, and everything the eight sentences ask about is somewhere in it. A teddy bear on the bed, a dog underneath it, toys in an open box, a cat behind that box, a lamp on the nightstand, a sailboat picture hanging over the bed, a rug in front of the bed and slippers beside it. Each sentence offers three words to circle rather than a blank to fill.

Working from a single scene is harder than it looks, because a child cannot answer one line and forget it. They have to keep going back to the same picture and find a different detail each time, which is closer to real reading comprehension than a row of separate clip art. The three choices are deliberately close together, so “on” and “over” and “in” have to actually be distinguished.

What students will practice

  • Read one picture to answer eight questions
  • Choose between three similar place words
  • Check an answer by looking back at the scene
