About this worksheet

Six sentences down the left, six pictures down the right, and a line to draw between each pair. The same green frog appears on a rock, under a mushroom, behind a rock, in a bucket, next to a mushroom and in front of a bucket, which means the pictures come in pairs that differ only by where the frog is sitting.

Those near-duplicate pairs are the whole point. A child who reads “in the bucket” and grabs the first bucket they see will get it wrong, because the other bucket picture has the frog standing in front of it. Sorting that out forces a real reading of the place word rather than a match on the noun. Quick to do and needs nothing but a pencil.

What students will practice

  • Read a sentence and find the picture it describes
  • Tell apart in, on, under, behind and next to
  • Draw a matching line accurately
