About this worksheet

Twelve line-art toys in two columns, a two-word choice beside each, same format as the kindergarten circle-the-word pages. The vocabulary is what puts it a year ahead.

The words are tricycle, dominoes, tractor, boomerang, abacus, submarine, penguin, tambourine, unicorn, whistle, piano and rattle. Most run three or four syllables, and several name things a child may know by sight long before they can read them.

Two pairs also close off the shortcut that the kindergarten pages leave open. Tambourine against tricycle both start with T, and piano against penguin both start with P, so a first-sound guess fails and a child has to read further into the word. That is the whole reason this page sits in Grade 1 rather than with the rest of the set.

If it turns out to be too much, drop back to “Playtime Toys” or “Toys We Play With” in the kindergarten toys set and come back to this one later.

What students will practice

  • Read multi-syllable toy words
  • Decode past the first letter to choose between look-alike words
  • Build wider vocabulary in print
