About this worksheet

Sixty-two short words fill a box on this page, and sixteen of them name a part of the body: chin, arm, toe, hair, thumb, lip, wrist, cheek, hip, tongue, chest, ankle, leg, palm, eyebrow and waist. The rest are ordinary things a first grader can already read, from wagon and pencil to lemon and kite. Circle the body words, leave the rest alone.

There is no list to check against, and that is the whole point of the sheet. A word search hands over the answers and asks a child to find them; this asks them to read a word, work out what it means, and decide. Wrist, palm, eyebrow and waist are the ones that catch people out, because they are parts a child can point to long before they can read the word for them. Black and white throughout, so it prints cheaply for a whole class.

What students will practice

  • Read 62 short words and sort them by meaning
  • Find 16 body parts including wrist, tongue and eyebrow
  • Decide word by word instead of copying from a list
