A word search ringed by sixteen full-color animals, each with an empty box under it. Find and circle all 14 words in the grid, then write each animal’s name in its box. The list runs calf, lamb, piglet, chick, duckling, pony, bull, ram, turkey, llama, dog, cat, bee and peacock.
The two halves ask for different things, and the second one is the harder one. Circling a word in a grid is pattern-matching, but an empty box gives a child nothing to copy, so they have to produce the spelling themselves. That, plus a word list built on baby-animal names and a peacock, is what makes this a first grade sheet. It runs long at 25 minutes; it works well as a folder-filler or an early-finisher page.
