About this worksheet

Eight sentence pairs, each with Yes and No underneath and a colored picture on the right. Ted has a cap and his cap is red, which is fine. Zoe has a doll and his doll is new, which is not.

Spotting a wrong word is a different job from writing a right one, and it is the harder of the two. A child filling in a blank only has to find something that fits; here they have to hold the sentence up against a rule and judge it, which is why this belongs near the end of the set rather than the start.

Four are correct and four are wrong, which is worth knowing as the adult. A child who circles Yes six or seven times has stopped reading and started guessing, and the even split makes that visible immediately.

The wrong ones are each wrong in a different way. A boy’s word used for a girl, your used where my belongs, my used for two people, and his given to a bird.

What students will practice

  • Judge whether a possessive adjective is used correctly
  • Spot a wrong word rather than supply a right one
  • Read eight sentence pairs with picture support
