About this worksheet

Ten sea animals in line art with a numbered box beside each, and a word bank of ten words at the top. Seal, prawn, orca, clam, urchin, walrus, ray, barnacle, manatee, cuttlefish.

This is the harder of the two word bank sheets, and the vocabulary is where the difficulty lives. Barnacle and cuttlefish are not words a child guesses at, and the manatee and the walrus are close enough in outline that a child who is skimming will swap them. Working out that the whiskered one with tusks is the walrus is the actual exercise.

Because every answer is spelled correctly in the bank, a child can self-correct without an adult sitting next to them. Cuttlefish is the one most often written from memory and got wrong, which is a useful thing for them to notice on their own.

The line art is plain black on white, so it prints cheaply and doubles as a coloring page once the writing is done.

What students will practice

  • Read and write multisyllabic animal names
  • Tell apart animals that look alike
  • Use a word bank to check spelling
