About this worksheet

Three spelling rules sit in a box at the top: most words simply take -ly, words ending in y change the y to an i first, and words ending in le drop the e and add y. Part A then gives ten adjectives to convert, chosen so a child meets all three rules rather than the easiest one ten times over.

Five of the ten are plain add-ly words, four (happy, easy, noisy, angry) need the y to i change, and gentle needs the -le rule, so nobody gets through Part A on a single pattern. Part B puts four of the new adverbs into sentences, which is where a spelling that looked right sitting in a list gets tested against a real one.

What students will practice

  • Add -ly to build an adverb from an adjective
  • Apply the y to i and drop-the-e spelling rules
  • Use a new adverb in a written sentence
