About this worksheet

A short story about Rosa walking home in the snow and finding a lost mitten, with exactly ten adverbs worked into it: yesterday, slowly, quietly, suddenly, carefully, everywhere, outside, tightly, softly and happily. Four questions follow, asking for one adverb that tells when, one that tells where, and the one that describes how Rosa knocked.

Finding adverbs in continuous prose is a different job from finding them in a numbered list, because nothing marks where to look and two of them open their sentences rather than trailing a verb. The last question asks how many were circled in all, and since the instruction at the top already says ten, a child who comes up short knows to go back before anyone tells them.

What students will practice

  • Find adverbs inside a connected story
  • Sort adverbs by how, when and where
  • Check your own count against the story
