About this worksheet

A grid of thirty word tiles with one legal route through it. Step only on adverbs, moving up, down, left or right, from quickly in the top left corner to carefully in the bottom right. The decoys do real work: bright, shiny, tall, kind, gentle, sleepy and quiet are all describing words, and a child who has been taught that describing words are adverbs will walk straight onto one.

There are exactly ten adverbs in the grid and every one of them lies on the solution path, so the closing question (how many adverbs are on your path) doubles as a check rather than a tally. Any answer under ten means a tile was skipped or a decoy was crossed on the way.

What students will practice

  • Tell adverbs apart from adjectives, nouns and verbs
  • Find a route moving up, down, left and right
  • Count the adverbs on the finished path
