About this worksheet

Ten sentences with three adverbs offered under each, and the twist is stated right at the top: all three are adverbs. A baby sleeps peacefully, angrily or loudly in her crib. Grandpa drives wildly, carefully or cheerfully through the heavy snow. Thunder crashes softly, gently or loudly during the storm.

Because none of the options can be eliminated on grammar, the work moves from labeling to meaning. A child who has learned to hunt for the -ly ending gets no help at all here, which is exactly what you want once identifying adverbs is already secure. Save this one for after the spotting sheets rather than starting with it.

What students will practice

  • Pick the adverb that fits the meaning of a sentence
  • Compare three options that are all grammatically correct
  • Use sentence context rather than word endings
