Leo finds a strange silver pencil in a box at a yard sale, and when he draws an apple with it, the apple rolls off the page and onto the table. He takes a bite, grins, and turns to a clean page to draw a puppy. Children like where it stops.

Two questions are about language rather than events. One asks what peculiar means, and the story gives enough around it (a silver pencil with tiny stars carved along its side) to work it out. The other asks what Leo’s jaw dropped says about how he felt, which is a first look at phrases that do not mean exactly what they say. The last question is an open one about what they would draw, and it is a nice one to share out loud.
