Eight rows, each with a boxed anchor word and four choices, set in a soft orange frame with a cloud and a bee: bug with rug, cake, pin and top; hen with cup, sat, pen and fig; bed with mud, tin, nap and red; pig with net, bun, dig and mat; hop with ten, mop, sad and fin; bat with sun, lip, peg and hat; duck with luck, bed, ram and tip; and net with tag, pin, mud and wet.
The first page in this set with no pictures at all, which makes it the real test of whether rhyming has moved from the ear to the page. Every word is a three-letter short-vowel word except “duck,” so a child who can read CVC words can read all of it. The distractors are chosen to share a first letter or a vowel rather than an ending, so guessing by shape does not work.
