Short Vowel Sort CVC Words Cut and Paste Worksheet

About this worksheet

Three columns headed a, i and o, and nine pictures to cut out and sort underneath: dog, pig, bag, box, cat, six, mop, van and pin. Each column takes exactly three.

Sorting asks something the earlier sheets do not, which is to compare sounds rather than work one word at a time. It is the same skill a child needs later for word families and rhyme. The even split is deliberate and doubles as a self-check, since a column with four pictures in it means something is in the wrong place. Short e and short u are left out on purpose: three columns is enough to think about at once.

• Sort words by the vowel sound in the middle
