A plainer, serif-set companion to the picture pages in this set. Eight rows: bell with drum, leaf and shell; chick with stick, moon and horse; sun with cloud, bun and tree; goat with ring, sock and boat; bag with flag, nest and cow; hen with fish, pen and rock; whale with snail, bread and kite; and pig with duck, star and wig.
The instruction line says “ends with the same sound,” which is the phrase worth repeating out loud, because it is the actual rule a child needs and it survives past this page. Row seven, whale and snail, is the one that usually needs a second listen: the two words look nothing alike on paper.
