About this worksheet

Eight single rows, each with two drawn and named words and a pair of thumb boxes: sock and bird, bell and shell, goat and coat, ring and cloud, snail and whale, fan and drum, crown and spoon, pig and wig. Four rhyme.

The title is the instruction. This one is meant to be said out loud, not scanned, and it pays off on the goat and coat row, where a child who is reading rather than listening sometimes hesitates over the different first letters. The instructions on this sheet use the British spelling “colour.”

What students will practice

  • Hear a rhyme in a spoken pair rather than a written one
  • Color thumbs up or thumbs down for each pair
  • Work down eight rows in one sitting
