About this worksheet

Eight illustrated pairs with YES and NO boxes: king and swing, lock and sock, nail and cheese, chair and pear, brush and lemon, broom and turtle, cane and plane, purse and melon. Four rhyme and four do not.

The four non-rhyming pairs are set up so the two words share nothing at all, which keeps the first pass honest: a child who is guessing tends to answer yes to everything, and pairs this far apart make that obvious immediately. Chair and pear is the one to look at afterwards, since neither the spelling nor the first sound gives any hint.

What students will practice

  • Judge a pair of words as rhyming or not
  • Work from pictures and words together
  • Complete eight decisions on one page
