Five rows each hold two groups of coins, left and right, with an empty circle between them. The child counts both sides, writes the amounts on the lines, and fills the circle with greater than, less than or equal to. A key at the top spells out what each symbol means.
Row four is the one to watch: four coins on the left and a single quarter on the right, and the quarter wins. Children who compare by counting coins rather than adding up their values get caught here, which makes it a useful conversation. Row three comes out equal, so the equals sign gets used at least once.
