About this worksheet

Twelve shapes fill the page, each one already divided by a line or two, and under each sits a yes and a no to circle. Some divisions are honest halves and fourths; others are near misses, like the circle cut slightly off center or the square split into one wide piece and two narrow ones. The mix of circles, squares, rectangles and a triangle keeps a child from settling on one shape’s answer and coasting.

This is the question that has to be settled before fractions make any sense at all, because a shape cut into four pieces is only fourths if those four pieces match. If your child hesitates, ask whether the pieces could be stacked on top of each other and line up. That is the whole test, and it works on every shape here.

What students will practice

  • Tell equal parts from unequal parts
  • Look past the number of pieces to their size
  • Judge halves, thirds and fourths by eye
